HOW FAKE EGGS STOP EGG LAYING BY PET BIRDS - THE BASICS

Fake Eggs are used to fool birds into thinking they are sitting on their own eggs. Sitting on a nest is a strong drive in many female birds, but not all. Hens are born with a number in mind of how many eggs should be in their clutch. (A clutch is a group of eggs laid at once.)

If eggs are destroyed, the female bird, is driven to replace them, and so ensure the survival of the species. It makes no difference to the hen if her eggs are fertilized. The need to reproduce is hormonal and natural and will continue throughout her lifetime, with a mate or not.

Many birds however, live happily in captivity, with and without mates, laying a few eggs throughout their life, without any ill effects or live offspring.

Others, for one reason or another, start laying eggs before maturing into adults, and continue laying one clutch after another. Even if chicks are allowed to hatch, it really does not stop the hormonal cycle. The only thing that stops chronic egg laying is IF THE BIRD THINKS SHE HAS A FULL CLUTCH. This is how fake eggs can be a life saver for your bird.

Laying eggs can deplete your bird of calcium when in captivity and not eating a balanced diet. Another serious side effect of bird reproduction is called egg binding, where the egg fails to pass outside of the body. Both these conditions can cause illness and the possibility of death, happening all to often.

When the female sits her nest, either real or plastic dummy eggs, she will be fiercely protective and her boundaries need to be respected. She will hiss, fluff her feathers, back up, and may attack any threat to her eggs. A lot of people say they "miss" their bird when she is in this state and no longer a plaything. Not to worry... this too shall pass. She will tire of the eggs, especially when the fake eggs don't hatch, and she will start to ignore them, becoming the sweet cooing playful bird you know and love.

This is the beauty of Fake Eggs. They serve their intended purpose, satisfying your bird's need to reproduce, and then they can be removed, washed, and saved for the next time she goes through her laying cycle. The time between nesting varies radically from bird to bird even within the same species, from chronic laying to years between breeding seasons..

IMPORTANT DIRECTIONS

Leave fake eggs in nest until hen has no interest in them. You can just put them in all at once and take out the real ones. The sooner and the more eggs the better, but try not to let the birds see you do it.

Put in the number of eggs that she would lay in a clutch, plus more. She will reject the ones she does not want. YOUR BIRD WILL KEEP LAYING UNTIL SHE HAS THE NUMBER OF EGGS SHE NEEDS IN HER NEST AT ONCE. Cockatiels usually need 6 or more fake plastic eggs. Fertilized eggs hatch in 21 days and another clutch can follow. It is best to leave the eggs in for as long as it takes, which could be months, before your hen looses interest in them.

Bonded pairs, male and female, will take turns sitting the eggs. They will defend their nest from intruders, so watch out when changing food and water daily. I have found a wide heavy shallow bowl placed at the bottom of the cage works nicely because I can see them and keep everything clean. Mama Bird comes out of her cage occasionally and takes her giant nesting poop, which is 4 times the size of the regular poop, don’t be alarmed. Poppa Bird, will sit the eggs when Mama’s on break and sings to her.

Most birds will not notice slight changes in size, color, shape, or texture. If it looks close to their egg they will generally accept it and do not notice the difference when the swap is made. A cover at night makes birds feel safe and secure to sit their nest in peace. A fresh sprig of millet and fresh cuttle bone will make for very happy birds. — Mel

RECENT FEEDBACK:

“I need the cockatiel size. I had five for four years and had no problem, then last summer I had 27 eggs and they all hatched (the birds were supposed to be all male). I hand raised them all - it was exhausting. I found homes for many but I still have the original five plus ten babies, and I sure as heck don't want any more. They are a trip, but one experience was enough!” Sandy “Hi, again! So far your eggs are doing the trick! However, I didn't think I had this many males!! I've got six pairs brooding, so I need more eggs! But at least I won't go through what I did last year. You're a life saver!” Sandy

Hi Mel, After my dove Angel's mishap with her last natural eggs between May 7 and 9th and her visit to Dr. Rosskoph on the 9th and her having to take antibiotics because of the problem with the second egg, she laid on the six lovebird eggs you sent me until last Thursday, May 7th!  She got up on the 7th and slept on her perch until tonight.  She began two days ago and heavy cooing yesterday and today about 3 p.m. she cooed for a whole hour straight, got back in her nest with her six eggs and didn't get back up tonight.  I am so happy.  I hope she lays on them another two months.  Thank God Almighty for you and your eggs!  Sincerely, Carolyn

“Hello Melanie, They actually arrived yesterday! I can report it looks like they are going to work out just fine. I just put them under one of my nesting 'tiels and she jumped back in her "nest" and is happily nesting away. I just wish I had these around years ago. Thanks!” DC

My dove sat on them for 3 months, which was outstanding.  I got them originally, because she had a breach egg in November 2010 that her avian vet had to remove and has she laid on her fake eggs until about two weeks ago when she left them, but I left them in her nest box.  Now she has returned to them miraculously.  I took her to the vet today to see if she perhaps had another one of her own eggs stuck inside her, but she didn't. He and I decided that she must think she re-laid.

I took your eggs with me to her avian vet so that he could see them and I just want you to know that he absolutely raved about them.  He asked me if I was sure that it wasn't a real egg!  I told him, no, see the little plastic strip around the middle?  I had called his receptionist to tell her about your eggs when I received them, and the doctor heard, but he told me today that he thought I meant a Easter egg like thing.  He said they even feel like real eggs!  Where are they located???  He's been a vet for over 40 years and he said he's never seen anything like it and he never would have believed they would be like they are, and told me that I had really stumbled across something. I heard him calling his assistant to tell her to come look at your website and how he never would have believed it!

“Thank you Melanie.  My pigeon has laid eggs in both the medium and small parrot size so I think a combo of will do the trick.  Thank you again for all of your help.  Customer service like you offer does not happen much in today's world.” Nancy

Hi Melanie, Just to let you know that the NY Bird Club does not advocate breeding -- this is why we recommend your company - for birth control.
Thanks for your great eggs, Anna  Manhattan Bird Club

THANK YOU. First of all, my husband now knows I'm NOT out of my mind, that this is indeed what I'm supposed to do, and secondly, I can stop searching through junk drawers and closets for little plastic egg decoys. You have saved my sanity! Kristy H.

It's important now as Alaska is swinging into our spring mode where we are rapidly (about five minutes more a day) getting more daylight after coming out of our famous "24 hour midnight" syndrome. Birds are hormonal and the need to breed behavior is beginning. I'm excited to be able to give Alaskans an option, a ray of hope and hopefully see the decline in the smaller birds dying from calcium depletion due to the ignorance of people yanking the eggs as soon as they are laid. It's an amazing fact people don't seem to realize when dealing with unwanted eggs- fertile or not. When I send your link and flyer out, I will remind people of that fact, which is why leaving an egg in the next is
important. - Lin  Alaska Bird Club

Hi Mel, Thank you so much for expediting the eggs, which I happily received today. I'm really new at all this, so you and your website have been very helpful. Before I, myself experienced the need for the fake eggs, a friend of mine was searching for them and I started to help her search and I found you and she ordered eggs from you. Now it was my turn. I would highly recommend you to anyone in need of this, your helpfulness and caring are actually felt. Thank you again. Best, Simone

I ordered the lovebird ones last week - thank you for sending them so quickly. I just got a pair of rescued doves last week. They must be happy here because we have eggs! I do animal rescue (cats, guinea pigs and now birds...). I definitely don't want any extra pets! Nor do I want to contribute to the overpopulation of homeless pets. I am so happy I found your site! Thank you for what you do! Cathy Juba

Hello! My eggs came today. I just wanted to thank you! My birds accepted them without a fuss. They really do have the same shape and weight as real eggs! Awesome eggs! Thanks again, Autumn
